2012 NMPA Convention Wrap-up

The NMPA 2012 convention wrapped up November November 3rd.  The convention was preceded by an Aluminum Certification day, sponsored by the certification committee successfully certified 5 members. Look under the New's Flash tab to find out who has recently been certified.  This is an addition to previous certifications.  The Convention was hosted by a number of NMPA Associate member vendor exhibitors.  Member prop shops were able to interact with our vendors and discuss and review everything new in the propeller industry.  Seminars presentation were made during the convention.  These facilitate our goal to provide our members with additional learning opportunities.  Information on these seminars are summarized in the 2012 Convention Wrap-up tab above.  The NMPA is governed by a volunteer board. Dave DeWitt  (Mercury Propellers) was elected as new president taking over for long-time president Jimmie Harrison (FJ Propellers).  The full 2013 board is as follows:

President:

Dave DeWitt, Mercury Marine Propellers

Vice President:

Darren Prouty, Precision Propeller Co.

Secretary:

Mike Jones, Coastal Propeller Service

Treasurer:

Paul Fox, General Propoeller

Member-at-Large:

Kevin Mitchell, Michigan Wheel Marine

Board Members:

Larry A. Kindberg, AccuTech Marine Propeller, Inc.

Jimmie Harrison, Frank & Jimmie's Propeller

Marcus Clements, Power Tech Propellers

Stew Foster, Prop Masters Inc.

Seminar Wrap Up

Mercury Marine Jeremy Alby

Mercury Historic RPM data – Jeremy scoured the past to bring a comprehensive list of all Mercury Marine Outboard and Cruiser RPM data necessary for correct propping of boats with these engines.  Jeremy reviewed the data and provided slip calculators as a method related solving prop related issues.

Western Branch  – Dick Barber

Dick presented The Nuts & Bolts of Shafting – This seminar went into detail of the latest and best methods of attaching both propellers and couplings to shafts.  All the variations of Nuts and Keeper Plates, Tapers and Splines, Keys/ Keyways and special treatments.  Even some thoughts on cotter pins!

Accu-Tech Propeller – Larry Kindberg

Quick Hits - This seminar presented an array of tips tools and techniques that Larry and his crew at AccuTech Marine Propeller have learned, developed and stolen from other sources over the years.

NMPA Website review

A detailed Presentation on this Website was held– logging in / how members Performance use / benefits Hackney Video the NMPA members

Performance Propeller Tim Hackney

Video stainless steel polishing presentation staring Tim

Power Tech - Steve Powers

Steve presented the Impact of pitch change on RPM:  A scientific basis for RPM calculations, and why the 400 rpm rule of thumb is increasingly irrelevant.  Steve showed various scenarios, and how very low pitches and very high pitches produce very different results from the middle pitch band.  Also he produced files and handouts that show how this is further impacted by motor rpm’s, and how low rev diesels and high rev 4 strokes further complicate matters.

ZF Marine – Andrew MacDonald

Andrew presented A Guide to Common Propeller Metals  -  This seminar discussed the major differences between a few of the most commonly used propellers metals Bronze, NiBral and SS; Material properties will be related to overall propeller design, specifically with regard to corrosion behavior, blade strength, casting happened and general performance.

NMPA Certification review – Larry Kindberg

Larry presented what happened at the November 1st Certification day at the R&R prop shop and and testing.

FJ Propeller – Greg Platzer

Golden Nuggets - Several practical generic propeller formulas will be presented.  Including how to determine propeller EAR from scanned chord lengths, how to determine the effective pitch of a scanned prop with variable pitch (useful for pitch mods) and how to determine the drag of a stopped propeller (useful for sail boaters and others). Copies of the formulas set up as “plug n chug”. Excel spreadsheets are available.

Michigan Wheel

Propulsion System Performance Optimization -  Advanced propulsion design and analysis techniques can provide benefits beyond just propeller optimization. This presentation highlighted the rational for and the results of some advanced propulsion system engineering being performed for larger pleasure, commercial, and military craft.

Linden Propeller

Welding aluminum propeller videos with Aladdin 3 N 1 rod from Gary L and Tim H. look for these to be available for members Online.

Pesco - Mike Meyers

Mike showcased a number of shop projects that he has been thinking about for years but has finally acted on this year.
